Zagreb Airport
Zagreb Airport has experienced a complete transformation over the past decade. In 2012 the ZAIC (Aeroports de Paris) consortium received a 30 year concession for the airport from the Government of Croatia. In 2017 a new 70,000 m2 terminal was opened, expanding capacity from 2 million to 5.5 million passengers per year. Constructed to support the anticipated growth of the airport up to 2025, the airport already has plans to increase capacity to 8 million passengers.
The Airport is the only commercial airport serving the capital city of Zagreb. More than 3.4 million people used the airport in 2019, catering both to the buoyant domestic market as well as the rapidly expanding number of international travelers.
Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia with a population of approximately 1.2 million. It has one of the highest growth rates of automobiles per capita in the European Union, putting a large strain on parking in general. The city is known for its lack of parking spaces and very high parking costs, which the Airport is profiting from.
The immediate surrounding area of Zagreb Airport is also undergoing rapid change. As the Airport grows, so will the demand for auxiliary services such as hotels, parking, storage, distribution facilities and business centers.
One of the main elements of the Airport concession is to increase capacity, as the new terminal reaches certain passenger milestones. However, the owners have already started planning on building a new apron capable of handling wide-body aircraft, which will allow it to reach the first major milestone of 5 million passengers within a few years.
