Zagreb Airport: Record Growth with Major Facility Expansion and Low-Cost Carrier Boost
Zagreb Airport is preparing to soar into a record-breaking 2024, with over four million passengers expected to pass through its gates. To accommodate surging demand, especially driven by low-cost carrier Ryanair, the airport is considering reopening its old terminal building. Croatia Airlines has suggested this move would allow Ryanair to maintain its discounted fees under an existing incentive contract that runs until mid-2026. While airport management has not confirmed these plans, the Croatian Ministry for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure has acknowledged discussions. In return for restoring the old terminal to full functionality, the state is prepared to extend the Zagreb Airport International Company (ZAIC)’s concession by nearly four years beyond its current 2042 endpoint.
At the same time, Zagreb Airport is already pushing ahead with substantial infrastructure upgrades. In partnership with France’s Alstef Group, the airport will add a state-of-the-art check-in island with 15 new desks, bringing the total to 45. The upgrades, set for completion by the first quarter of 2025, also include a new screening line and advanced conveyor systems to integrate with the existing screening and baggage handling networks. A new steel platform and system automation upgrades will ensure seamless operations as the airport scales up.
Under its broader expansion strategy, Zagreb Airport is gearing up for the five-million-passenger milestone expected post-pandemic in 2026. Its original phased plans include extending the departures area, adding new gates, installing dual jet bridges, and building a wide-body aircraft apron. With its eyes firmly on the future, Zagreb Airport is ascending to new heights in global aviation.
