Zagreb Airport to Expand and Add “Airport City”

The ‘Franjo Tuđman’ airport is already expanding: Soon the business city – Airport City
The new terminal of the Franjo Tuđman Airport opened in spring last year, but due to the strong growth of the number of passengers, concessionaires at the largest Croatian aerodrome have already begun with the first steps to increase capacity.

The terminal building itself is 65,000 square meters and has a capacity of five million passengers, but the terminal has 3.5 million passengers installed per year. And this year, Franjo Tuđman ZL will be very close to the numbers.

Zagreb’s first airport in Zagreb last year exceeded three million passengers, or more precisely 3.09 million, with growth of nearly 12 percent compared to 2016. In the first eight months of this year, F. Tuđman recorded a growth of nine percent and is expected to in 2018 have about 3.4 million passengers. At Zagreb International Airport (MZLZ), which is the concessionaire ZL Franjo Tuđman, they say that with the first steps to increase airport capacity, began in the spring of this year by adding a carousel to sorting luggage in the stationery area.

It is currently being mentioned that an additional baggage carousel is being installed on the ground floor of the passenger building. The terminal is open with three carousels, and soon there will be four of them. The terminal is also open with 30 check-in counters, and in MZLZ they say that during the next two years they plan to install a new battery with 15 more of these counters. It will also incorporate the third EDS, an automatic detection device for explosives in a dedicated baggage. The total value of these works is, say, three million euros.

“These operations have full capacity for serving and processing five million passengers a year, according to the concession agreement,” they explain. The terminal currently has eight aviomostions, one of which is to accept wide-ranging aircraft. But as the number of intercontinental lines increases (for Seoul and Dubai are seasonal, seasonal for Toronto, and the introduction of new intercontinental flights, primarily in China), the MZLZ reveals the possibility of adjusting the existing bridges to accommodate wide.

In addition, this autumn, construction of airport parking facilities at the airport’s airfield will begin, totaling about 6,000 square meters and the value of these works is about 500,000 euros. A 750,000-euro worth of building building with 20 convertibles will soon begin. The MZLZ reminds that the expansion of the terminal building under the concession agreement is envisaged after the annual passenger traffic reaches the number of five million, which is currently predicting that it will take place in 2026. Next year, the construction of the hotel should be started next to ZL Franjo Tudjman.

This project is being prepared by the Zagreb Airport which, in the end, supervises the implementation of the concession agreement in ZL Franjo Tudjman. ZLZ director Ranko Ilić says that hotel is part of the future project of Zagreb Airport City, which envisages construction of a business town along ZL Franjo Tuđman.
Hilton, Hyatt, Accor …

Ilić states that by the end of 2018 they plan to prepare the tender documentation and by the end of February 2019 announce a tender for the selection of the most favorable offer and that in the fall of 2019 the construction of the hotel could begin. The project value was 187.5 million kuna, and was made by architects Branko Kincl and Velimir Neidhardt, who together with Jura Radić authors and terminals ZL Franjo Tudjman.
