Ryanair Fuels Explosive Passenger Surge at Zagreb Airport in 2024

Zagreb Airport is on the verge of a record-breaking year, with a surge in passenger numbers across most routes compared to 2023.

Zagreb Airport is on the verge of a record-breaking year, with a surge in passenger numbers across most routes compared to the record year of 2023.

Data from Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office, reveals that Ryanair has been a game-changer for the airport’s growth in the first half of the year. Ryanair’s leisure routes, particularly to Malta and Malaga, have skyrocketed, with passenger traffic soaring by 72% and 98% year-on-year. The airline’s London Stansted service now dominates, surpassing the London Heathrow route—operated by Croatia Airlines and British Airways—by over 16,000 passengers.

As already reported earlier this month, Zagreb Airport has once again surpassed its all-time monthly passenger record, welcoming an astounding 439,008 travelers in August, marking a 14.4% increase compared to August 2023.

This achievement not only sets a new high for the fourth consecutive month but also continues an extraordinary streak of 18 consecutive months in which the airport has broken monthly passenger records.

The August milestone followed closely behind July’s figure of 432,608 passengers, representing a 17.1% increase compared to the previous year.

This means that Zagreb Airport boasts the most significant percentual rise in passengers when comparing pre- and post-COVID levels in all European airports.

In the first eight months of 2024, the airport accommodated a total of 2,842,434 passengers, reflecting a 16.28% rise over the same period in 2023. With such consistent growth, driven largely by airlines like Ryanair, Zagreb Airport continues to build on its operational efficiency and rising popularity.

With further expansions in services and enhancements in airport capacity, Zagreb is on track for sustained growth through the remainder of 2024 with projections exceeding 4,200,000 passengers.
