Record Growth: New Ryanair Routes Put Pressure on Parking Capacity in Zagreb Airport
Ryanair is set to expand its operations from Zagreb Airport next summer, with plans to launch flights to Palermo on March 30. If confirmed, this route will mark the first-ever direct service between Zagreb and the Sicilian capital, operating three times per week. With Italy proving a successful market for Ryanair from Zagreb—serving Rome, Bergamo, Naples, and Pisa—this expansion reinforces Italy as the airline’s largest market from Croatia’s capital.
Entering the fourth year of a five-year Growth Incentive Model with Zagreb Airport, Ryanair must add at least 75,000 new departing passengers annually to maintain its incentives, with additional discounts available for exceeding 150,000. This model aligns with the airport’s record-breaking growth trajectory; Zagreb welcomed 422,862 passengers in September, a 14% year-on-year increase and the latest in a 19-month streak of record-setting months.
However, the rise in traffic has strained airport infrastructure, with parking occupancy already at 96%. As Ryanair’s expansion continues to drive more passengers, the demand on facilities like parking may prompt additional developments to support Zagreb Airport’s rapidly growing traffic.
